The MIT Technical Leadership and Communication (TLC) Programs strengthen students’ preparedness to thrive in their careers by facilitating learning and development of critical skills in leadership, collaboration, and communication at all stages of their MIT journey.

The TLC Employer Network consists of organizations that choose to engage with UPOP, GEL, or GradEL. Joining the network is free and employers can choose which  program(s) to engage with depending on what best fits their recruiting and hiring needs.

Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program

– Sophomores
– Career Readiness
– 1-year cohort-based classes and workshops

UPOP helps sophomores across all MIT majors develop the professional skills necessary to succeed in their chosen career paths. The yearlong program focuses on the career readiness skills that will support students’ success in seeking, being hired for, and thriving in a variety of professional opportunities, while honing their communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.

UPOP students benefit from interactive classes and workshops, 1:1 advising, and support from UPOP’s dedicated community of staff, mentors, program alumni, and employer network members.

Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program

– Juniors and Seniors
– Engineering Leadership
– 1- to 2-year cohort-based certificate program

GEL develops undergraduate students to be the next generation of technical leaders. Program participants advance their skills in leadership and collaboration in engineering contexts, preparing them for real-world engineering practice.

Throughout the program, GEL students practice the capabilities of effective engineering leaders in experiential team-based settings.

GEL complements MIT’s technical education, enabling undergraduates to be more effective at MIT and in their careers beyond the institute.

Riccio-MIT Graduate Engineering Leadership Program

– Graduate Students (Masters and PhD)
– Engineering Leadership
– Self-directed graduate certificate program

GradEL develops MIT graduate students across all engineering and science disciplines into technical leaders prepared for professional success and powerful impact. Participants can deepen their leadership, collaboration, and communication skills through experiential courses and workshops led by accomplished leaders from industry, research, and academia. Many students begin with a single course or workshop, then pursue the Graduate Certificate in Technical Leadership.

GradEL prepares students to understand the real-world context of their work and to create real-world impact throughout their careers—whether in industry, academia, or entrepreneurship.
